On social media, people are telling you to ditch your sunscreen. Some say you’re blocking out the sun’s “gorgeous rays” and robbing your body of vitamin D. Others claim sunscreen is straight-up toxic—that it seeps dangerous chemicals into your blood and messes with your hormones. A widely shared video clip warns that “two hours after applying it to the skin, these toxic environmental estrogens can actually be detected in the blood.” And then there’s the claim that sunscreen itself could be causing cancer: “When they compare sunscreen users to non-sunscreen users, the sunscreen users faced increased risks of all the major skin cancers.” So what is actually going on? Science Vs host Wendy Zuckerman and producer Michelle Dang spent years wanting to answer this question, and they finally dug into the evidence. The picture that emerges is more nuanced than either the alarmists or the sunscreen loyalists might expect—and the answer depends a lot on who you are.

Show Notes

Sunscreen is supposed to protect us from dangerous stuff like cancer, but all over social media, people are saying that we’ve been getting it all wrong. We’re being told that our sunscreen is full of toxic chemicals, that wearing it could mess with our vitamin D levels — even that sunscreen itself actually increases our risk of skin cancer. So, what can the science tell us here? Should we toss our SPF-filled creams and sprays in the bin?? And could the answer here be different depending on your skin tone? We talk to researchers Dr. Brandon Adler, Prof. Rachel Neale, and Dr. Adewole Adamson to find out.
