Scary Stories - Special Glasses

In the summer of 1999, a seven-year-old boy in Northern Michigan snuck out of his house at midnight, stole his father's "magic fishing glasses," and walked alone to the end of a dark dock on a lake he believed was 120 feet deep and full of monsters. He was convinced the glasses would let him see the bottom. Instead, they showed him a pale blue light floating above the water, drifting toward him, speaking his name.

The episode is a first-person narrative, told by the now-adult Alex, about the summer he learned that his father's playful lies were not the only things hiding beneath the surface of their lake. The central question is not whether the glasses were magic, but what happens when a child's desire to prove himself collides with a very real danger he was never meant to see.

The Ritual of the Magic Glasses

Alex's father was a storyteller. He told his son that the lake was full of monsters, that a monkey-human hybrid once lived on Monkey Island, and that his polarized sunglasses were actually a magical artifact made by a wizard. The glasses, he explained, allowed the wearer to "see through the light" and spot fish that were invisible to the naked eye. The ritual was elaborate: his father would scan the horizon, protect his backpack, whisper "Abracadabra," and press a pretend button on the frame. Then he would cast his line and immediately catch a fish.
