A remote drilling site in frozen northern wilderness. A damaged bunkhouse wall. A thirty-year-old technical logbook hidden behind the drywall. What the unnamed narrator found inside was the journal of Jack Hutchinson, a site operator who worked the same stretch of desolate land in 1990 and 1991—and who documented something that began as a curiosity and ended as a reckoning with the impossible.
Jack's story starts with his monitoring partner, Vladislav—a retired deep earth isolation miner from Ukraine who goes by Vlad, "like the impaler." DEI mining is a profession so dangerous that most who enter it either quit after a scare, have a mental breakdown, or die alone in a hole miles underground. Vlad is a survivor: shredded with muscle, barely five feet tall, with enormous hands and feet. He is also, Jack quickly learns, utterly unflappable. Nothing frightens him.
