Scary Stories- Descent

A geological driller working a remote winter site in the early 1990s stumbles onto something far stranger than the routine pressure readings and equipment checks he was paid to babysit. His new partner, Vladislav, is a retired Deep Earth Isolation miner—a man who spent decades alone at depths where no one else could survive. When Vlad begins sleepwalking, muttering in an unrecognizable language, and obsessively digging at a patch of frozen ground, the driller follows him into a discovery that rewrites the story of who Vlad really is.

The narrator, Jack, works a lonely off-season post at a drilling site somewhere cold and semi-desolate. The company doesn't advertise the location; the job involves monitoring drills, taking readings, and releasing pressure from waste storage tanks on a fixed schedule to prevent blowouts. Vladislav arrives direct from Ukraine—loud, crass, and physically unusual. He is extremely short, with enormous hands and feet, and pale skin. His career was DEI mining: descending alone into mines past the depth where equipment and normal crews can function, operating hand tools for weeks without sunlight. Most DEI miners die young in those holes. Vlad made it to retirement, but his behavior at the site quickly suggests his underground instincts never left him.
