In the 1979 film Kramer vs. Kramer, Dustin Hoffman’s character, a workaholic ad executive abandoned by his wife, has to make French toast for his son for the first time. He cracks eggs into a coffee cup, dunks broken bread into it, fingers the shells out, and pours the leftover egg batter directly into the pan. It is a disaster. But by the end of the film, after months of single parenthood, he makes French toast again in a silent, perfectly synchronized dance with his son—the right bowl, the right heat, the right rhythm. That two-scene arc, as actor Tim Baltz put it, uses breakfast to show a man going from "a dad who basically didn't know his kid" to "we're partners."
