Apex Predator: Stalked by a Wild Beast

On April 30, 1998, 24-year-old Andy Peterson was hiking down Carpenter Peak in Roxborough State Park, Colorado, when he heard a snap in the brush. He saw a mountain lion—a 200-pound predator—sitting under a pine tree, eating a freshly killed mule deer. Andy froze. He knew the animal’s senses were far better than his own. “At any moment this lion, their senses are far better than mine, this mountain lion is just gonna look right at me and it’s game on,” he recalls. The Stalk and the Attack

Andy had come to the park that morning on a whim. He had overslept, had errands to run, but decided to hike anyway. The trail to the summit was his escape—a place to be alone, away from the noise of work and people. He passed other hikers without making eye contact, focused only on reaching his favorite rock at the top. But on the way down, the mountain lion appeared. Andy tried to back away slowly, but the moment a scrub oak broke his line of sight, the lion launched. “It jumped right on me, slammed into my chest,” he says. The lion’s claws raked his neck and torso. Andy managed to wriggle free and ran downhill, swinging his backpack like a shield and screaming for help. The lion followed effortlessly.
