AI Summary
5 min readOn Sunday, May 4, 1980, at 6:07 PM in Split’s Poljud Stadium, 50,000 fans packed in for the crunch match of the Yugoslav football season: Hajduk versus Red Star Belgrade, Croatia versus Serbia. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 when a buzz began to sweep the terraces. Fans pressed transistor radios to their ears. A league dignitary raced from the tunnel, waving his arms, gesturing for the referee to halt play. The stadium fell to absolute silence. Then, over the tannoy: “Comrade Tito has died.”
The players gathered in the center circle, white shirts and red-and-white stripes intermingling, arms around each other’s shoulders. Some wept openly. Others dropped to their haunches, dabbing tears with their jerseys. In the stands, grown men sobbed. Then a socialist anthem started up: “Tito, we swear by you.” The match was abandoned in the 41st minute, the result declared null and void. According to the football records, a replay was scheduled for the following Wednesday. That game, the episode notes, “was theirs for the taking.”

Show Notes
Josip Broz was the wartime resistance leader who became Tito, the strongman ruler of Yugoslavia. He defeated both Hitler and Mussolini. He stared down Stalin. He consolidated much of the Balkans as a single state, helping it to punch above its weight. But beyond his undoubted political skill and avuncular demeanour there was also a darkness… and an iron fist. So who really was the man behind the name? How did he chart a third way through the Cold War? And how is he remembered today?
