Ina Garten has a new cocktail recipe she’s excited about: a bourbon sour she discovered at a hotel in the South of France, made with a little chocolate liqueur and vanilla. “Somebody described it as like drinking liquid velvet,” she tells Kara Swisher. It’s the kind of drink she’d make for a guest on her new podcast, Happy Hour with Ina Garten, launching September 16th on the Vox Media Podcast Network. But the drink is almost secondary. What Garten really wants is the long conversation that comes with it.
Why a podcast instead of another TV show
Garten spent two decades on the Food Network, but she always felt constrained by the format. “I really started out thinking I wanted to do a conversation with somebody and to really connect with them,” she says. “We ended up doing a cooking show with a conversation, but I just found a very short conversation hard because you end up actually doing an interview, not a conversation.” With six minutes to get to know someone, she explains, there’s no room for the kind of connection she’s after. A podcast gives her an hour, edited down to 45 minutes, and the freedom to let the conversation breathe.
