Answering 7 Arguments For Atheism | Joe Schmid | Last Call Ep. 30
September 3, 2026
AI Summary
5 min readJoe Schmid, a former atheist YouTuber who converted to Catholicism, fields eight arguments against God's existence in a rapid-fire format. Rather than treating each objection as a knockout blow, Schmid argues that theism—and specifically Catholicism—offers coherent, philosophically defensible responses that often turn the objections on their head. The conversation is structured as a defense, not a conversion attempt, and Schmid relies on philosophical frameworks, theodicy, and empirical miracles to make his case.
The Problem of Evil and Divine Hiddenness
The most common objection—why a good, all-powerful God allows suffering—is met with two main responses. First, Schmid invokes the "skeptical theist" position: an infinite God may have reasons for permitting evil that finite human minds cannot grasp. Just as a parent allows a child to endure a vaccination shot for a greater good, God may permit suffering for reasons beyond our comprehension. Second, he argues that many goods—courage, forgiveness, character development—logically require the existence of suffering or wrongdoing to be manifested.
