Money as a Test of Faith

"If you don't use it, you lose it." That principle—applied to money, talents, and life itself—anchors this episode's argument. Pastor Rick argues that how we handle money reveals something deeper: whether we trust God or let fear control us. The parable of the talents (Matthew 25) serves as the framework, and the central figure is the servant who received one talent and buried it. Not because he lost it or spent it badly, but because he did nothing with it at all.

The master calls that servant "wicked and lazy." Rick acknowledges the word sounds extreme—we associate wickedness with violence or abuse—but the point is deliberate: "Anytime you misuse or abuse the resources I gave you, and you don't use them wisely—that's wicked." Doing nothing, he insists, is a sin because God did not put anyone on earth to do nothing.

Why the One-Talent Person Buries His Gift

The most revealing detail in the parable is which servant buried his talent. It was the one-talent person, not the five- or two-talent ones. Rick explains the psychology: "When I only have one talent, I look at it and go, 'Look at all these five-talent people. They don't need me. I'll just sit on the bench and watch.'" The feeling of being a non-superstar becomes an excuse for inaction.
