How Jesus Treats His Sheep - Part 1

The most famous chapter in the Bible, Psalm 23, contains a phrase that requires more explanation than any other: "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me." In this episode, Pastor Rick Warren unpacks what these two shepherd's tools actually mean and how they reveal two distinct ways God wants to work in a believer's life.

Warren begins by physically demonstrating a rod and a staff. The rod is a short, club-like defensive weapon, about a foot and a half long, used to guard sheep against predators like wolves and mountain lions. The staff is a long pole with a crook at the end, used not for defense but for guiding and directing the sheep—pulling them back from cliff edges or out of thorn bushes. As Warren puts it, the shepherd controls the sheep "by hook or by crook."

The symbolism is straightforward but deep. The rod represents power and authority. The staff represents care and compassion. These two tools, and the two attributes they symbolize, are how the Good Shepherd—Jesus—treats his flock. Warren traces this imagery through history, noting that Egyptian pharaohs are depicted holding a rod (or flail) in one hand and a staff in the other, signifying that the ruler is both the protector of the nation and its ultimate authority. In Christian tradition, bishops carry a staff called a crozier for the same reason.
