Why You Don’t Need to Fear the Future—Part Two

A mother of a toddler walks behind her child, picking up mess after mess — the dropped food, the knocked-over cup, the scattered toys. The child never sees most of the cleanup. Pastor Rick Warren uses this image to open his message: God’s goodness and mercy work the same way, following behind you, cleaning up chaos you didn’t even know you left behind. “You have no idea how many messes you created in life that God cleaned up,” he says. This is the central claim of the episode: that the future holds nothing to fear because God’s goodness, mercy, and glory are already there, ahead of you.

The first two reasons: goodness watches over you, mercy follows you

Warren builds his argument from Psalm 23, specifically the line “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life.” He emphasizes the word all. God’s goodness and mercy are not intermittent — not Monday-Wednesday-Friday blessings with Tuesday-Thursday on your own. “He is always merciful every moment of every day. He is always good to you every moment of every day.” When you fully internalize that God is never not good to you and never not merciful to you, fear drops. You don’t know what will happen next week or next decade, but you know two things: God will bring good even out of bad, and God will forgive without condemnation.
