What Receiving a Message Actually Feels Like

Jesse describes her ability as a constant low-level noise that she mostly tries to filter out. Spirits “keep bugging me,” she says, repeating a phrase or a name until she finally acknowledges them. The communication is not a single channel: she hears voices in her head, sees images that play like a movie, and sometimes feels physical sensations that belong to the deceased. In one case, a spirit made her whole body hurt; when she told the person she was reading that she was “getting some kind of cancer,” the person confirmed it had engulfed the body. She also gets smells, impressions, and what she calls “replays” of past events during paranormal investigations—and she deliberately avoids reading any location’s history beforehand, so she cannot be accused of feeding back known facts.
