Nikki and Chris of the Somerset Ghosthunters didn’t set out to become paranormal investigators. For Nikki, it started after her nan passed away — she saw her nan’s reflection in a window instead of her own, and later, when her mother died, she heard an audible voice say “my mom” just before the phone call came. Chris, who was non-verbal as a child and says he had a “pretend friend,” became convinced during the pandemic when the couple bought their daughter a spirit box, she used it once and got scared, and they tried it themselves at a place called the Pine’s Caf — a burned-out building that, they later learned, had been a military hospital. The spirit box said “take me to the hospital” clear as day. That was the moment the equipment felt real.

How they investigate — and what they avoid

The Somerset Ghosthunters work mostly as a two-person team, sometimes with a couple of friends handling cameras. They drive a distinctive van (called “Eddie the Edge,” decorated with Iron Maiden-inspired art) and often decide where to go only after they’re already on the road. Their daughter does all the historical research — but deliberately after the investigation, so they go in blind and don’t let prior knowledge shape what they experience.
