AI Summary
5 min read“I saw gnomes in the fifth grade on a field trip in Western North Carolina,” Matt Vaughn says early in this episode of Six Degrees of John Keel. That childhood sighting—a family of tiny, feathered-hat figures spied with classmates at a garnet mine—set the tone for a conversation that ranges from therapeutic approaches to ontological shock, the mechanics of synchronicity, the British phenomenon of psychic questing, and the strange magnetism that pulls paranormal researchers toward hardline Christianity. Host Barbara Fisher and guest co-host Andy Mercer (a practicing psychologist) join Vaughn, a therapist and author of My Cosmic Trigger Finger is Broken, to explore how the mind and reality interact when high strangeness enters the picture.

Show Notes
'Matt Vaughn is a very cool and interesting person. Author of My Cosmic Trigger: High Strangeness in Theory and Practice, a first volume in a planned series of books, Matt is also a therapist, a seeker and an experiencer. Having Andy Mercer, another professional therapist, along for the ride means we got deeply into the psychological aspects of the paranormal, and it was fun.
We also talked about gnomes.
Gnomes seem to a theme coming up recently.
There’s an audio note at the opening of the episode explaining what high-strangeness mess occurred in the recording process. Because of course, technical difficulties arose. In the last 15 minutes of the episode, Matt’s audio disappeared. We did all the things correctly, and yet, there was something interfering with his part of the recording. So, I ended up editing it so the topic we had been talking about got finished, and then just cut the last 10 minutes or so off. That’s why the ending is weird.
Yes, it could be recorded a second time, but I didn’t want to lose the discussion we had. Because it was a really fascinating one and I knew we’d never capture all of it again. And, Matt is a really busy guy, so I decided to release this episode as it is, and then have Matt come back when he can, and we’ll just ramble on about other cool topics.
