The customer's current bra has two problems: the band is too tight, and there's gapping in the cups. "No one wants to feel like that," the sales associate says. The goal is to feel "feminine, confident" — and that starts with a proper fit.

Why Measurements Matter More Than Labels

The associate insists on a fresh measurement before recommending anything. Bodies fluctuate, she explains, so assuming your size from last year is a gamble. She asks the customer to remove any layers and take a deep breath — not while sucking in. "If you're sucking in even subconsciously, like growing up in a swimming or always, you know, don't suck in your dummies for pictures, things like that... subconsciously we might do it, but you don't want a bra that fits when you're sucking in because actually the band size will then be too big."

The mechanism here is straightforward: sucking in expands the rib cage, so a band measured that way will be loose during normal breathing. The result is a bra that shifts, rides up, and fails to support.
