Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Roman. Frustration is growing in Venezuela following last week's earthquake that killed more than 1,400 people. Survivors claim the government's response has been paralyzed by bureaucracy. In the coastal town of Los Corales, a backhoe was needed to dig through the ruins of a 12-story building, but local residents say the government operator never showed up, so they had to pay for one themselves. Doctors and rescue workers have faced delays getting to the disaster zone because they lacked government permits. "All this is costing lives," says Rosalia Bustamante, who lost several friends when the building collapsed.

Despite a memorandum of understanding to end fighting, the US and Iran are trading increasing fire. The US military central command said it struck military targets inside Iran after Iran attacked a foreign ship carrying oil to Qatar in the Strait of Hormuz. The flashpoint is disagreement over who will control the Strait. Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, which both host US military bases, and warned of "a complete halt to ongoing negotiations" if US strikes continue. President Trump took to Truth Social with his own threats to attack militarily "with full force."
