Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the goal of ongoing talks is "a lasting peace where Israelis don't have to live under the threat of rocket fire from Hezbollah and Lebanon, and the Lebanese can live free of outside interference." Israel’s ambassador stated that Iran and Hezbollah are out, and the road to peace with Lebanon is in. Lebanon’s ambassador countered that the goal is to restore Lebanese sovereignty, which means an eventual withdrawal of Israeli forces. Rubio was not directly involved in the negotiations.

Proof of Citizenship and the Housing Bill

President Trump used an address to the Faith and Freedom Coalition's conference in Washington to press for congressional action on legislation requiring voters to provide proof of citizenship to cast ballots. "And now we have to pass the Save America Act to protect our sacred American elections," he said. The push comes after a federal district court judge in Boston permanently barred the Trump administration's executive orders on elections, including the proof-of-citizenship documentation requirement at the polls. Adding to the standoff, the president refused to sign broadly bipartisan national housing legislation until Congress passes the Save America Act. Congressional leaders sent the housing bill to his desk anyway.
