President Donald Trump is making his first domestic trip since signing the agreement to end the war with Iran, visiting a Mac Trucks manufacturing plant to pivot the conversation back to the economy. The trip comes as Republican elected officials have been pressing Trump to focus on economic issues for months with midterms approaching, and as his approval ratings continue to fall. According to NPR’s most recent polling, just 36% of voters approve of Trump’s overall job performance, while 59% disapprove — the widest gap he has faced during either term in office.

The Iran deal and negotiations

While Trump visits the plant, the president of Iran is in Islamabad meeting with Pakistani officials who are mediating talks to end the US-Israeli war with Iran. Simultaneously, negotiators are meeting in Geneva. NPR’s A. Batrawi reports that Vice President Vance is leading those negotiations, and he says Iran has agreed to let nuclear inspectors into the country. The current deal lifts oil sanctions on Iran through much of August and unlocks billions of Iran’s frozen dollars in overseas accounts in Qatar. Vance has been trying to sell the agreement as one that is primarily good for the United States, saying Iran won’t see anything until its policies change.
