President Trump announced he is canceling plans to attack Iran tonight, saying in a social media post that discussions with the Islamic Republic have been "brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved." The decision comes after Trump had threatened to seize key oil infrastructure, including Kharg Island. The U.S. and Iran have continued to trade fire, threatening a ceasefire agreement they reaffirmed in April, and are asserting dueling blockades in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow transit route for about a quarter of the globe's oil shipments.

U.S. actions in the Strait of Hormuz

Central Command said the U.S. fired on and disabled a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz as it was attempting to transport oil from Iran—the second day in a row this has happened. As NPR's Greg Myre reported, the broader U.S. strategy is to get oil tankers from friendly Arab countries out of the Gulf and to block ships going to and from Iran. While the numbers appear to be in the U.S. favor, Myre noted that overall, it is still a relatively small number compared to pre-war shipping traffic.
