Something Old (Encore)

The story opens with a narrator admitting she hasn't used her iron in a long time. She had to retrieve it from a high shelf. But she needed it, because she was preparing a wedding gift, and she wanted it done properly. The gift was a box of vintage handkerchiefs she had found at an estate sale, still sealed in their original packaging from decades ago. She had embroidered the couple's names, the date of the wedding, and small paw prints for their pets onto each handkerchief. Now she was ironing them so they would feel crisp and fresh, even though they were old.

The narrator works at a local museum, a former private residence now filled with restored belongings from the family that lived there and from other villagers of the past. She spent most of her career teaching history at a college, and after downshifting, she found a warm welcome at the museum. She spends time cataloging, teaching about the history of the house and its objects, and scouting for new finds at estate sales and swap meets. She is regularly astonished that she gets to work there.
