Daily Pressures in Low-Income Housing

At age twenty, Renfree lived in low-income apartments with her eighteen-month-old twin girls and a newborn. Most neighbors were also single mothers. On a cold morning she stood at a sink piled with scorched pots and pans. She had not yet learned to cook and routinely burned cookware. The twins sat in high chairs while the infant slept in a swing. Looking at the dishes felt like confronting the larger disorder of her life. The accumulation of unwashed items stood as visible proof of how far behind she felt.

Removing the Evidence

Rather than wash the dishes, Renfree placed them one by one into a white garbage bag. She carried the bag outside in the rain and left it beside an already full apartment dumpster. She then took the children out for the day. When she returned after dark, the porch light was still broken. She kicked a box left on the step, brought it inside, and opened it on the table.
