Jon McNeill, former Tesla president, walked into his first meeting with Elon Musk expecting small talk. He got two sentences of niceties, then Musk said: "I've got this problem in manufacturing. Have you ever seen it before?" Two hours later, they were still deep in the problem. McNeill later realized this was Musk's hiring method: interrogate a specific problem, go super deep, and see how many layers the person can get through before they're stumped. "It's almost like a video game," McNeill says. "How many layers can this player get through before they're stomped?"
The key signal Musk looks for: "wow, wow, wow" in the first 20 minutes. If the conversation doesn't produce that, the resume doesn't matter. And if it does, the resume doesn't matter either.
