In 1987, David Rubenstein raised $5 million from four investors to start a private equity firm in Washington, D.C. Today, that firm—Carlyle—manages $500 billion. Rubenstein sat down to explain how he went from a blue-collar upbringing in Baltimore and a job in the Carter White House to building one of the world's largest investment firms, and what he learned along the way about timing, talent, and the constant fear that something will go wrong.

The 37-year-old deadline and the decision to start

Rubenstein did not start Carlyle until he was 37, and he did so because of a specific piece of data he had read: the average person starts their first company between ages 28 and 37. "I said, geez if I don't do it now, I'll never do it," he recalled. That self-imposed deadline mattered because Rubenstein had already spent years in law and government, including a stint as a domestic policy aide to President Jimmy Carter. After Carter lost the 1980 election, Rubenstein found himself out of power at 31, unable to get calls returned from people who had once promised him jobs. "You want a friend in Washington, get a dog," he said, quoting Harry Truman. He eventually practiced law, realized he was not a great lawyer, and began building an investment firm a couple of years later.
