Over the following weeks, Matt's family learned to accommodate their uninvited guest. Tommy never ate. He sat at the dinner table but never touched food. He gathered the family each evening for lessons on how to be a good person—lessons about loving others and helping those in need. But there were unspoken rules: never talk about Tommy to anyone outside the house, and never refuse him.
