In the summer of 2007, a young amateur writer named Mr. Al traveled to Chicago to interview a woman named Mary E. She was one of roughly four hundred people who had encountered a mysterious image called "smile.jpg" on a small bulletin board system in 1992, and she was the only known victim willing to speak openly about what happened afterward. But when Mr. Al arrived, Mary locked herself in her bedroom, crying and speaking incoherently about her nightmares. Her husband Terrence apologized, and the interview never happened. A year later, Mary emailed Mr. Al a confession: she had planned to give him a floppy disk containing the image, effectively passing the curse to a stranger, but couldn't bring herself to do it. Shortly after sending that warning, she killed herself.
