A Prank Mistaken for a Panther

In October 2021, in rural Henderson County, North Carolina, two couples—Rachel and Chris, Autumn and Jake—gathered at Jake and Autumn's wooded home. Recent reports of a black panther prowling the area had locals on edge, despite North Carolina's native panthers being brownish. Chris claimed to have seen the black one stalking his puppy, prompting him and Jake to carry guns for protection.

While Rachel and Autumn prepared to dye Rachel's hair, Rachel's phone died, sending Chris and Jake on a nighttime walk through the woods to fetch a charger from Chris and Rachel's nearby apartment. Halfway there, rustling revealed a raccoon, easing tensions. Returning, a snapped twig, shaking bushes, and raspy sounds—actually the women hiding to prank the men with rotten eggs—convinced the armed pair they faced the panther. They fired into the bushes until screams revealed the mistake: Rachel was fatally shot, Autumn wounded. Police ruled it an accident; all were sober, guns legal. No evidence of the panther ever surfaced.
