In Panama, the couple scouted beachfront land for an eco-lodge resort, openly enjoying their relationship for the first time. But new residency rules required a British police "certificate of good conduct," threatening John's fake identity. Inspired by another spy novel, John returned to the UK in 2007, entered a London police station feigning amnesia under his real name, hoping to clear his record and obtain a legitimate passport.
