In March 1944, deep in the snow-covered wilderness of Lapland inside the Arctic Circle, Finnish soldier Aimo Koivunen faced a desperate fight for survival during World War II. Finland, allied with Germany against the Soviet Union to reclaim ceded territory, had sent Aimo and his squadron on a reconnaissance ski mission. What began as a quiet patrol turned into chaos, revealing how a single dose of army rations propelled him through two weeks of isolation, injury, and hallucination.

The Soviet Ambush and Initial Escape

Around 10 a.m. on March 18, Aimo's group sat by a campfire melting snow for tea after two days of nonstop skiing in five-degree cold. Exhausted and sore, they heard nearby machine-gun fire. Soviet soldiers, skiing down a mountainside a quarter-mile away, attacked with overwhelming numbers. Aimo, the oldest of six siblings who had promised his family he'd return unharmed, felt pure terror.

The lieutenant ordered a retreat. Aimo and his comrades grabbed weapons and skis and fled down the mountain's backside, bullets ricocheting off trees. Leading the pack, Aimo broke tracks in deep snow, burning energy fast amid an adrenaline crash. He slowed, teammates passed him, and gunfire closed in. Thinking of his siblings, he lost control, tumbled, hit a tree, and passed out.
