We Have a Base on the Dark Side of the Moon. There's A Reason It's Been Kept A Secret.

The rookie astronaut beside him has been told his death on Earth will be faked, and he will never return. Their destination is not the International Space Station but Ares, a secret base on the far side of the Moon—the side that never faces Earth. The base has been hidden for decades, built under a compartmentalization protocol modeled on the Manhattan Project, where most of the 130,000 workers never knew what they were actually building. The mission of Ares was simple: to defend Earth from an alien invasion that had been predicted since the 1970s.

The Invasion Begins

Within hours of the narrator's arrival, the invasion arrives years ahead of schedule. The aliens come in obsidian-black drop pods that land on the lunar surface. They do not attack with weapons or physical force. Instead, they emit a sound that hijacks the human brain, appearing as voices inside the head. The effect is immediate and catastrophic. At Station 12, the crew is found dead, having killed each other with whatever tools were at hand. One survivor, Frederick, is tied to a wall by his crewmates to prevent him from harming himself. He later explains that the "voices" told him what to do, and the rest of the crew simply turned on one another after being "changed."
