The Train I’m On Hasn’t Stopped Driving for 17 Days

A man wakes up in a dark train compartment, disoriented and weak. His legs barely work. His phone is dead. His memory cuts off after boarding the train on November 12th. When he finally stands and looks outside, there is nothing—an empty void beyond the windows. The train is still moving, but he appears to be the only living person on board.

He stumbles through car after car. In each compartment, passengers sit perfectly still. They are not breathing. They have no pulse. But their eyes are open, wider than seems possible. When he checks the watch of one dead man, the date reads November 29th. He has been asleep on a moving train for seventeen days.

The Surveyors and the Sentinel

The dead passengers begin to blink. Then they turn their heads. They are not corpses—they are something else. A police officer named John Hendricks finds the narrator and explains: the passengers are in a kind of hibernation, used as sensory extensions by a larger entity. The survivors call them "surveyors." The thing that controls them is called a "sentinel"—a massive, eyeless, obsidian-black creature that moves through the train using tendrils. It has no head, no face, but it can seep through cracks and reform itself. When it shrieks, the surveyors wake and lock onto any living person they can find.
