The janitor knew something was wrong the moment he stepped into the boys' locker room. Thick steam hung in the air like twenty showers had just run, but the building had been empty for hours. He sent a photo to the second-shift guy, waited for it to clear, and found the shower handle still hot. Kids, he figured—teenagers sneaking in after hours. Then somebody screamed. Not a playful scream. "Deep, animal-like," he recalls. "Couldn't even tell if it was a man or a woman." He ran toward it.

What he found in the library changed everything. A girl named Janelle Peterson was hanging from the rafters, tied by a rope around her waist, bleeding from a cut across her shirt.
