The Setup: A Deal Too Good to Be True

The narrator, Jay, is a young man with a low-paying job and no family connections. When he finds a spacious row house in a prime neighborhood for a fraction of the market rate, he knows something is off. The landlord, Terry, is a gruff, limping man who asks bizarre questions during the tour—whether Jay sells drugs, whether he has family—and eventually admits that previous tenants have fled after reporting ghost sightings in the basement. Terry dismisses the claims as hysteria, but he has installed a lock on the basement door at a former tenant's request. Jay signs the lease anyway, reasoning that a few bumps in the night are worth the rent savings.
