I Got Hired at a Hotel in New York. We Have a STRANGE List of Rules.

In October 2020, Jesse Fox was desperate. Laid off in August, down to his last can of tuna, couch-surfing at 22, he needed any money he could get. A chance conversation at a Hoboken bar with a woman named Catherine led to a job opening at the Magnum, a luxury hotel in New York. What arrived in the mail wasn't a standard interview invitation. It was a multi-page packet with fifteen numbered rules governing how to enter the building, where to sit, what to say, who to avoid eye contact with, and what to do if a man with a feather in his pocket was in the room.

The Rules

The instructions were absurdly specific. If the east entrance was open, walk in and proceed to step 3A. If closed, walk to the south side entrance marked with a decorative woman and proceed at step 3B. If you arrived through the first situation, a blonde attendant would take your coat and you'd deposit electronics in a bin beside a mirror. If through the second, you'd be alone—place electronics in a bin on the nearest accent table without a mirror, and leave all personal belongings on the chair beside it.
