The narrator had spent years trying to become a homeowner—growing up in a nice house with a yard, a swing, and a sandbox, then losing it all when the recession hit. After a cascade of setbacks (the housing crisis, the pandemic, repeated layoffs), he finally bought a cheap one-story house on Hilltop. It was a fixer-upper: no warm water, bad floors, no reception, no working Wi-Fi. But over a year and a half, he transformed it. New floors, new doors, fixed plumbing, trimmed yard, step stones out front. He was happy. Then, during a brutal stretch of all-nighters for a work deadline, a man knocked on his door.

The Man Who Used to Live There

The man at the door was Lars—early sixties, long white hair, slim, messy beard. He said he used to live there and needed something from the bedroom. Before the narrator could stop him, Lars used an old key to let himself in, slammed the door, and locked it. He crawled into the bedroom wardrobe (which the narrator had nailed to the floor) and started pounding on the back wall, asking for an axe or a power tool. When the narrator refused, another knock came. Men with rifles surrounded the house. Lars bolted for the back door, but a German Shepherd brought him down. Eight armed men in fatigues and bulletproof vests swarmed the house.
