Hegseth Defends $1.5 Trillion Budget, War Powers Debate

War Secretary Pete Hegseth faced the Senate Armed Services Committee to defend a $1.5 trillion budget request. The hearing turned tense when Democrat Senator Tim Kane pressed Hegseth on whether the administration would seek congressional approval for military operations in Iran under the War Powers Act of 1973, which gives the president 60 days from the start of any military conflict to seek approval or end operations. Hegseth deferred to the White House and White House counsel, arguing that the current ceasefire pauses the 60-day clock. Kane disagreed, saying "the 60 days runs maybe tomorrow."
