In Mark 2, four men carry a paralyzed friend to Jesus, find the door blocked by a crowd, climb onto the roof, tear open a hole, and lower the man down on his mat. Jesus sees them and says five words that contain one of the most remarkable theological statements in the Gospels: "When Jesus saw their faith." Not the paralytic's faith. Their faith. The man on the mat receives forgiveness and healing based on faith he did not supply.
The Faith That Carries Another Person
The Greek word used for "bring" in the passage is phero — to bear, to carry, to bring. It describes a sustained physical act of bearing the full weight of another person across distance and through obstacles toward a determined destination. The four men carried the one who could not reach that destination on his own.
The paralytic arrives in the most complete state of dependence the Gospels describe. He cannot walk. He is totally dependent on four other men for every aspect of his physical presence before Christ. The Bible does not tell us who these men were—brothers, cousins, close friends—but they loved this man and believed Jesus could heal him. There is no evidence the sick man believed Jesus could heal him. He is recorded as doing nothing, saying nothing, asking nothing, believing nothing. He is entirely passive in his own deliverance.

In today's Morning Manna, Doc Burkhart examines Proverbs 25:21–22, one of the most influential passages in the Book of Proverbs and the foundation for Jesus' command to love your enemies and Paul's teaching in Romans 12. Rather than responding to hostility with retaliation, believers are called to meet their enemies' needs with acts of kindness, trusting God with the outcome. This lesson explores the meaning of "heaping coals of fire," the promise of the Lord's reward, and why overcoming evil with good is one of the greatest demonstrations of Christlike character.
