At 6:24 p.m. Eastern from Cape Canaveral, four astronauts—commander Reid Wiseman (oldest to leave low Earth orbit), pilot Victor Glover (first Black astronaut beyond low Earth orbit), Christina Koch (first woman beyond low Earth orbit), and Jeremy Hansen (first non-U.S. citizen beyond low Earth orbit)—launch aboard Boeing's Space Launch System rocket and Lockheed Martin's Orion capsule. Taller than the Statue of Liberty, the hardware tests Orion's life support and systems in a cramped space equivalent to two minivans' volume.
