The airlines make more money from their loyalty programs." This explains why Spirit Airlines imploded—it had a terrible loyalty program and no premium product. JetBlue is struggling for similar reasons. Meanwhile, Delta's co-branded Amex portfolio is so dominant that Kelly has heard "1% of US GDP is put on a Delta Amex card."
