The headline number looked alarming: consumer prices rose 4.2% year over year in May, the highest reading since April 2023. But when you dig into the data, the picture gets more complicated — and more interesting. Monthly inflation actually slowed, rising just 0.5% compared to 0.6% in April, which gave economists "cautiously optimistic that this inflation wave may have peaked, as long as oil prices don't spike again."
The culprit was almost entirely energy. Gas prices surged more than 40% year over year, hitting $4.56 a gallon in May, and energy accounted for over 60% of the monthly CPI increase. Strip out volatile food and energy costs, and core inflation came in at just 2.9% year over year and 0.2% month over month — right in line with economists' expectations. Car insurance, prescription drugs, and new vehicle prices all fell. The big question was whether higher energy costs would trickle into the rest of the economy — whether diesel prices would force trucking companies to raise rates, pushing grocery prices higher. The answer, so far, is no. Grocery prices rose just 0.1%, and food overall was up only 0.2%.
