AI Summary
5 min readAmericans are pushing back against mass surveillance in a way that has surprised even the companies building it. In July, more than 20 local jurisdictions canceled their contracts with Flock, an $8.4 billion company that leases AI-powered license plate recognition cameras to law enforcement. That was the highest number of cancellations in a single month on record. Los Angeles hit pause on 138 of Flock's pole-mounted cameras. In other communities, the cameras have been vandalized, and officials have put bags over them instead of renewing their deals. The backlash has reached a fever pitch, and it is drawing together an unusual coalition.
The Flock Camera Backlash
Flock cameras are everywhere. The company says 40% of all U.S. law enforcement departments — about 7,000 of them — deploy its cameras, and there are roughly 120,000 units across the country. The cameras automatically read license plates, log the data, and store it in an AI-powered database. Flock argues this is an effective crime-fighting tool. It cites a 2023 study (commissioned by Flock itself) claiming the system was involved in preventing roughly 700,000 crimes per year, or about 10% of all reported U.S. crimes. A more recent study bumped that number to 1 million cases. Boulder, Colorado, reported a 34.5% drop in motor vehicle theft after installing 31 cameras.
