IdiotSpeak Episode #3: Game of Spoilers

The conversation opens with a confession: one host has never read the books and is only caught up through season three of the show. The other has read every George R.R. Martin publication multiple times and owns HBO solely for Game of Thrones. What follows is a sprawling, spoiler-heavy comparison of the books and the television adaptation, organized not by episode but by grievance, theory, and genuine affection for the source material.

The Season Five Schism

Up through season four, the show tracked the books reasonably well—"a few deviations here or there" that served the plot or gave book readers something new to appreciate. Season five is where the hosts say the adaptation broke faith. The most consequential change: Sansa Stark is married to Ramsay Snow (the sadistic Bolton bastard) instead of Jane Poole, Sansa's friend, pretending to be Arya in the books. This is not a minor substitution. It changes what happens to Sansa's character and what Martin has planned for her in the unpublished sixth book. The book-reader host says Martin released a Sansa chapter right around the episode's airing showing her far from Winterfell and betrothed to someone else—a move he reads as a deliberate signal: she's fine in my version.
