Spencer Greenberg, a mathematician turned psychologist, spent years analyzing over 500 self-improvement techniques drawn from more than 100 books and 20 types of therapy. What he and his co-author Jeremy Stevenson discovered surprised them: every single technique could be boiled down to just 12 underlying psychological strategies—what they call "levers." But the more provocative finding was why so many people bounce from one self-help method to another without making real progress. The problem, Greenberg argues, isn't that the techniques don't work. It's that people use the wrong technique at the wrong time for the wrong person, often because they've been sold a silver bullet that doesn't exist.
The Selection Bias Trap
Greenberg identifies a cognitive bias that even the smartest people fall for: finding something genuinely life-changing and then insisting everyone must do it. He calls it the "golden hammer" problem, borrowing a term from his friend Gwynda Bogle. A public intellectual gets famous for a small number of principles and then sees those principles everywhere. "What's your problem?" Greenberg jokes. "Oh, athlete's foot? Allow me to show you my CPAP machine."
