Zach Braff has OCD. As a kid, he had obsessive tapping rituals—touching doorknobs a certain number of times or something bad might happen to his family. Even as a young person, he knew it was irrational, but as he puts it, he made a kind of Pascal's wager: "I don't want my family to be harmed. Not sure if it's gonna do anything, but I might as well." That same wiring that made him anxious as a child later became the engine of his career. And it also became the thing that kept him awake at two in the morning texting crew members about an insert shot of a phone.
The Double-Edged Sword of Hypervigilance
Braff describes his resting state as "anxious." His father had a temper, and Braff believes that childhood experience put him permanently on edge, waiting for something bad to happen. That same hypervigilance, however, made him an obsessive filmmaker. On the set of Scrubs, while other actors went to their dressing rooms between takes, Braff stayed on set asking directors questions. "What are you doing? That's so cool." He treated the show like grad school, absorbing techniques from every director who came through.
