Nvidia went to the bond market yesterday and attracted orders three times greater than the bonds on offer, according to Bloomberg. The chipmaker is far from alone: Alphabet issued $85 billion worth of new shares last month, and both Amazon and Alphabet have raised billions in the bond market in recent months. The twist is that these are already some of the most cash-rich companies in history. The question is why they need more.
The data center spending spree
The answer is artificial intelligence. Running AI models requires massive amounts of computing power, and big tech is building out the data center infrastructure to support it — collectively spending hundreds of billions of dollars this year alone. Julie Osk, a tech analyst and founder of Osk Advisory, called it "an unprecedented level of capital expenditure for most of these companies." The cash these firms already have on hand is not enough to cover it.
