The Friday Incident with Merlin Mann

Merlin Mann returned to Mac Power Users for the first time since he was the show's inaugural guest sixteen years ago, and the conversation quickly moved past app talk into something more personal: how he has rebuilt his entire relationship with his computer around large language models, and the psychological cost of getting that relationship right.

The episode's central tension is not about which model is best, but about trust. Mann described a process of working with AI that feels less like using a tool and more like managing a brilliant but unreliable employee. "You might be the greatest employee in the world," he said, addressing his LLM. "You might even be the most perfect employee in the world for me. But there's a critical flaw in place if you typically perhaps several times a day forget that you work for me."

That forgetfulness is what drove Mann away from Claude Code after months of heavy use. He described a canonical failure he calls "the Friday incident," in which the model, following his instructions to clean up and optimize, wiped out a large portion of his configuration. Worse, it "lost the awareness to be aware of what it got rid of." That kind of context collapse — where the model forgets its own job mid-session — became intolerable. "It's like talking to grandma and she wants to know when she can get a phosphate at Walgreens," he said.
