Making Educational Videos for 17 Years with Ian Byrd

Ian Byrd started making educational videos 17 years ago while teaching gifted sixth graders in the same school district he grew up in. What began as a blog about classroom techniques turned into a speaking career that had him flying 100,000 miles a year, then into a video library that survived a pandemic pivot, and finally into a subscription business serving school districts. Along the way, he developed a set of deliberate operating principles about where to spend his time, what to automate, and how to use—and not use—his tools.

The Pivot from Speaking to Products

Byrd's early videos failed because he simply recorded his workshops—lecturing teachers as if they were in a conference room. The breakthrough came when he realized teachers didn't want more instruction; they wanted something they could hand to students who already understood the material. So he redesigned each video into three or four short segments, each about 90 seconds long. He would model a sample, then turn it over for the student to work. This structure let teachers send advanced students to a computer while continuing with the rest of the class.
