AI Summary

5 min read

John Bunn was 14 years old when police arrested him for a murder he did not commit. He spent the next 17 years in prison. He was convicted of killing two correctional officers in Brooklyn, a crime that placed a target on his back from the moment he entered custody. He was exonerated in 2016, ten years after his release on parole, and now speaks publicly about what the system did to him — and what it took to survive.

How a Wrongful Conviction Happens

Bunn grew up in Brooklyn in a household that fell apart after crack hit the neighborhood. His father was murdered before he was born, his mother struggled with depression and alcoholism, and by age eight the family was stealing electricity from light poles. Bunn could not read. He was left back in third and fourth grade. He got into fights constantly. He was angry, and he did not know how to process it.

Show Notes

John Bunn grew up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and at just 14 years old was arrested for a murder he did not commit. His case was handled by NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella, whose investigative practices would later come under intense scrutiny in numerous wrongful-conviction cases. Despite Bunn and his 17-year-old co-defendant not matching the description of the shooters, both teenagers were convicted in 1992, and John was sentenced to 7 years to life. Behind bars, he taught himself to read, earned his GED at 17, and ultimately spent years fighting to prove his innocence. After being paroled in 2006, that fight continued for another 12 years until his conviction was vacated and all charges were dismissed in 2018. In 2020, New York City settled his wrongful-conviction lawsuit for $5.9 million.
