I Was a Michigan Dope Dealer — Then Spent 12 Years In Prison | Nate Johnson

AI Summary
5 min readNate Johnson grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of two former heroin addicts who had done prison time in Kentucky before moving north to enter a recovery program. His household was dysfunctional by any measure—absent parents, physical discipline, and adults cycling in and out who should not have been there. Johnson and his brother were molested by someone who had come out of a drug program to help the family. By fifth grade, he was stealing from gas stations and bikes from the neighborhood, then selling dime bags of weed in junior high. By eighth grade, he had learned about "double-ups" in crack—give $10, get a $20 rock, sell it for $20—and the arithmetic hooked him. He saved his lunch money, made his first sale, and was fascinated. Over the next few years, he learned the trade through trial and error: getting his dope switched for a peanut by an addict, having a buyer slap the rocks out of his hand and speed off, getting schooled by older dealers on how to handle money-first transactions. He left home at 15, slept on a friend's couch, and hit the block.

Show Notes
Nate Johnson grew up in Michigan, turned to the streets at a young age, and cycled in and out of juvenile detention and jail before a drug and robbery case sent him to Michigan state prison for 12 and a half years. But somewhere inside those walls, everything changed. He found his purpose, committed himself to rebuilding his life, and walked out determined to help others do the same. Today, Nate has built Michigan's largest reentry organization, co-founded the state's first reentry conference and a national reentry convening, and is now developing a "Reentry Ecosystem" aimed at changing how America approaches life after prison.
