I Was a Hells Angel for 10 Years — Here's Why I Finally Walked Away | George "Joby" Walters

AI Summary
5 min readGeorge "Joby" Walters spent a decade as a Hells Angel, becoming close friends with founder Sonny Barger, before walking away. His story is not one of a thrill-seeker who got in over his head, but of a man who cycled through identities—soldier, outlaw biker, cowboy, fugitive—before finally finding one that held. The patch, he came to see, was heavier than it looked, and the brotherhood it promised was often a lie.
From the Ohio Valley to the Outlaw Life
Walters grew up in southeastern Ohio, a kid who liked to fight and chase horizons. He joined the Army at 17, served four years, and came home restless. A broken-down motorcycle led him to a party thrown by the Avengers, a one-percenter club in Huntington, West Virginia. For the first time, he felt he fit in. "A bunch of guys that relate to what you do, how you are, who you are, what you represent," he says. "At that time in life, that was my identity." He prospected, became a warlord, and spent years running with the Avengers, clashing with the Pagans and living the raw biker life of the 1970s and 80s. The club was simpler then: "Don't steal from me. Borrow my bike if you ask. Leave my old lady alone." There was less politics, more brotherhood. He left the Avengers after being run down by a truck, broke his ankle, and drifted into a new life as a cowboy and hunting guide in the mountains of the West.

Show Notes
George "Joby" Walters grew up in Ohio, joined the Army, and developed a passion for mechanics and motorcycles before joining the Avengers Motorcycle Club in Alabama. After an injury pushed him away from the club, he eventually landed in Arizona, where he patched into the Hells Angels in the late 1990s and became close personal friends with the legendary Sonny Barger. Over the next decade, Joby found himself in the middle of violent conflicts with rival clubs including the Mongols and Vagos and was present at the infamous Harrah's Casino riot in Laughlin, Nevada, on April 27, 2002, when the Hells Angels and Mongols clashed in one of the most notorious biker confrontations in American history. In the aftermath, he went on the run to Mexico, eventually took a plea deal that sent him to prison, and ultimately made the decision to walk away from the Hells Angels after 10 years. Now, Joby is telling the complete story of what life inside one of the world's most notorious motorcycle clubs was really like — from brotherhood and loyalty to violence, prison, and what it took to finally leave it behind.
